GREEN THOUGHTS

 Keep Your Picnic Green

During the long warm days of summer it is always nice to eat outdoors.  Whether you are traveling, spending the day at the beach or just want to have a casual family outing, a picnic is the logical answer.  They can be a lot of fun but if the proper precautions are not taken can also be damaging to the planet.  Some of the things to consider doing to keep your picnic green are:

1.     Leave the area clean.  It is a good idea to pack reusable dishes so you will be sure to take them back home along with any left over food.  Biodegradable plates are available if you prefer to dispose of them but always put them in the proper bins along with any plastic utensils, plastic wrap etc.  Never leave anything on the table or ground to spoil the atmosphere for future picnickers.

2.     Take a reusable picnic basket.  If you don’t think you will use it enough to buy a basket you could use a backpack, shopping bag etc.

3.     Don’t throw food on the ground to feed the animals.  You may attract the undesirable animals and insects, and often the food left is not the healthiest for the animals.

4.     Respect the rules of the park.  If they don’t allow grills or fires plan your meal around food that doesn’t have to be heated.  If you can grill do it responsibly so as not the damage your surroundings.  Fresh fruit and vegetables are always a good choice for additions to any meal.

5.     Protect your body and the environment by using a bug spray and sun block that will not have harmful effects on either you or your surroundings.  Candles to keep insets away can be used but take the necessary precautions to avoid starting a fire.

6.     If you are camping always use bio-degradable soap, detergents and shampoos.  Never use the lake as a place to wash your dishes, clothes or car.  If the water becomes polluted it could harm any plant or fish life as well as marring the beauty of the area.
