HERB FAIR
Many of
you probably enjoy spending an afternoon or a day exploring some of the towns
and villages in our area. One of the places you may not thought of visiting is
Durham. It is an interesting valley town on Highway 6 and Grey Road 4 about 44
kilometers south of Owen Sound. It developed as a mill town around the Saugeen
River in the 1850’s, but today is better known for its parks, McGowan Falls,
Welbeck Sawmill and downtown buildings with murals by Alan Hilgendorf. There are
also three manmade dams and a Conservation Area with campsites. It is an
interesting spot to explore and enjoy any time during the summer but if you can
arrange it, you may want to take in one of their annual events to make your trip
even more interesting.
The
first is their Herb Fair held the second Saturday in June in Riverside Park
behind the Town Hall.
 
This
is the time and place you can learn anything you would like to know about herbs
and native flowers. You can sniff, feel, taste and ask questions about the
variety of herbs, flowers, vegetables, vines and crafts displayed at all of the
booths. The crafts include: baskets, pots, garden sculptures, bird houses, and
natural soap among other items. Folk singers provide background music as you
explore the displays at the booths. You will also find some herb related booths
set up inside the Town Hall where there is also a reasonably priced lunch
available including sandwiches, homemade pie and a beverage. A number of gardens
in town are open for you to enjoy during the days of the fair.
Their
other major event is the Wood Expo held on the second weekend in August at the
Welbeck Sawmill. To get there take Highway 6 up the hill through the Upper Town
and follow the signs. The location is worth a visit even when the fair is not
on. Other events they sponsor or take part in are the Agricultural Fair in
September, Autumn Leaves Studio Tour in October, and the Lighting of the
Heritage Walkway Bridge in November.
