No timeline for implementation of mandatory home energy audits
As a full time REALTOR® and President of the REALTORS®® Association of Grey
Bruce Owen Sound,
I feel it is important to clear up some misconceptions that homebuyers and
sellers may have regarding the issue of mandatory home energy audits. The
misconception among some consumers is that, with the passage of the Green
Energy Act, 2009, home energy audits have become or will soon become a
mandatory part of a residential real estate transaction in Ontario.
Although it received royal assent in May of 2009, not all sections of the Green
Energy Act have taken effect including the mandatory home energy audit section
of the Act. In fact, the government has no clear timeline for the implementation
of mandatory home energy audits.
Instead, the
Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure has committed to holding more
consultations with Ontario REALTORS® and other stakeholders to explore how a
system of mandatory audits would work. While organized real estate disagrees
with the premise of making home energy audits mandatory, REALTORS® are committed
to working with the Minister of Energy and Infrastructure to ensure any system
of mandatory home energy audits balances the need to promote energy conservation
with the interests of homeowners.
This decision
to hold more consultations acknowledges the significant challenges facing the
implementation of a system of mandatory home energy audits in Ontario.
Karen Cox,
President
REALTORS® Association of Grey Bruce Owen Sound |
