GREEN THOUGHTS

OUR MEDICINE CABINET

Our medicine cabinets are often full of different types of medication some of which we no longer use.  Beside the prescriptions, there are pills and tablets sold over the counter for our aches, pains, indigestion, obesity, colds, sinus, and all our other ailments.  Some remedies also come in liquid form, jells, ointments and creams, but may still contain harmful ingredients. Even some vitamins, supplements, natural and herbal medicines, etc. can be dangerous when added to other medicines, if taken by some people with allergies, or in the wrong dosage.  Usually we are not aware of the side effects of some of the ingredients our medications contain, so great care should be taken for storing and disposing of them.

Here are some precautions we should all take.

1.      Store all your medications in a safe, secure location, preferably cool .dry, away from food, and out of the reach of children or experimental teenagers.  (the bathroom is not usually the best spot it may be damp.)  Ask your doctor or pharmacist if they should be refrigerated.

2.      Always keep prescriptions in their original containers (except the ones in your daily organizer) and keep all instructions with them.

3.      Never take medications, (prescriptions or over-the-counter) that were prescribed for someone else, have changed in color, texture or taste, or are past their expiry date.  Check with your pharmacist if you are not sure if it is safe to take them.

4.      Go through your medicines at least once a year to determine which ones are no longer safe or are not being used, and dispose of them safely.

5.      Never throw unwanted medicine in the garbage or down the toilet or sink.  They could end up contaminating the soil, drinking water, lakes, streams, fish and wildlife.  Take them to your pharmacy, they will either dispose of them for you or tell you the best place to take them in your area.

6.      Not only the medicine itself, but also the container it came in may be a danger if disposed of carelessly.  Although some prescription containers can safely be used to store pins, beads and other small objects, never use them for other medicines when travelling, the container may contain residue from the original product.  Return them to the pharmacy when getting the prescription refilled and they may reuse them for the refill.  Return the others with the medicines you are disposing of.

7.      Equipment for dispensing medication is an even bigger danger and should be handled with great care.  Never throw syringes in the garbage, they can contain a small amount of blood which puts the people handling the garbage at risk.  Your pharmacy will have special means of disposing of them.

If you always use the same pharmacy they will have a record of all your prescriptions and can advise you of the best and safest remedy to take for occasional ailments such as colds.  They will also tell you the best way to dispose of any of the products you use.  If it should be treated as hazardous waste they will advise you if there is a pick-up in your area or where  the closest depot to drop it off is.  Your pharmacist is interested in you so why not take advantage of their knowledge and services.
